Three green bunker fuels
now entering commercial deployment

The challenge of decarbonising deep-sea shipping is unique: vessels carry thousands of tonnes of fuel for journeys lasting weeks. Only liquid or easily liquefied fuels with near-zero lifecycle GHG emissions qualify. Three are now viable.

E-Methanol
Synthetic methanol (CH₃OH) produced from renewable hydrogen and captured CO₂. The leading green bunker fuel of the 2020s — liquid at ambient temperature and pressure, compatible with modified existing tank infrastructure, and already in commercial use aboard Maersk's dual-fuel fleet.

The fuel with the highest long-term potential for deep-sea decarbonisation. Yara Eyde: the world's first commercial ammonia-powered container ship, Oslo–Hamburg route, 2026.

Bio-LNG / Synthetic LNG
Liquefied natural gas from biomethane or Power-to-Gas sources. Uses the world's existing LNG bunkering infrastructure — thousands of terminals and bunkering vessels. The practical transition fuel while e-methanol and e-ammonia scale up to volumes required by the global fleet.

FuelEU Maritime:
the regulation that makes green bunkering mandatory

FuelEU Maritime entered into force on 1 January 2025. It is not a voluntary framework — it applies to all ships above 5,000 GT calling at EEA ports, regardless of flag state.

Why e-methanol and e-ammonia — not batteries or compressed hydrogen
  • Energy density — ocean crossings require weeks of fuel at thousands of tonnes · batteries are physically not feasible for vessels above ~500 GT on routes longer than ~100 km
  • Compressed hydrogen — storage at 700 bar or liquefaction at −253°C adds prohibitive cost and complexity for commercial vessels · not viable at scale before 2040
  • Drop-in compatibility — dual-fuel MAN ES and Wärtsilä engines run on methanol or ammonia blended with conventional fuel during the transition
  • Existing infrastructure leverage — methanol uses existing tank standards with modest modifications · ammonia uses LPG-grade technology already present in most major ports
  • Natural hydrogen connection — if geological H₂ from Lorraine reaches €0.50/kg from 2028, the production cost of both e-methanol and e-ammonia falls toward fossil parity — removing the green premium that currently requires ETS support
